L5P Injector Pigtail Failure: Why It Happens and How to Stop It

The 2017 and newer L5P Duramax is the strongest, most reliable engine GM has ever put in an HD truck. It also has one of the cheapest known weak points of any modern diesel: the small two-wire electrical connectors that plug into each injector. When one of these pigtails gives up, an otherwise healthy truck starts stumbling, throws injector codes, and can eventually leave you on the side of the road.

We know because it happened to our own shop truck. Twice.

Here is what actually fails, the symptoms and codes to watch for, and what to do about it, whether your truck is already acting up or you want to make sure it never does.

What the L5P injector pigtail problem actually is

Every L5P has eight fuel injectors, and each one gets its signal through a small plug-in connector on a short lead, commonly called a pigtail. The factory connector (GM part 19368140) is the same design across 2017-2024 Silverado 2500HD/3500HD and Sierra 2500HD/3500HD trucks.

The part that fails is not the injector. It is the connection. A running diesel vibrates constantly, and the male and female halves of the factory connector are free to move against each other in tiny amounts. Over thousands of kilometers, that micro-movement scrubs the plating off the terminal contact surfaces. The industry term for it is fretting wear.

As the contact surfaces wear, they oxidize and shed a fine black dust inside the connector, and electrical resistance climbs. Eventually the injector circuit reads intermittent or open, the ECM flags that cylinder, and the injector stops firing cleanly. The injector itself is usually fine. The 30 cents of terminal contact feeding it is not.

Symptoms and codes to watch for

A failing injector pigtail on an L5P usually shows up as some combination of:

  • Check engine light with codes P0201 through P0208 (injector circuit, cylinders 1 through 8)
  • Rough idle or a stumble, usually worst at idle and low RPM
  • A misfire isolated to one cylinder
  • Reduced power or reduced engine speed mode
  • Symptoms that come and go at first: the code clears, then returns days or weeks later

The last digit of the code tells you the cylinder: P0201 is cylinder 1, P0204 is cylinder 4, and so on through P0208. Early on, the connection drops out only when heat and vibration line up, which is why the problem can feel intermittent. Once the wear is bad enough, the cylinder goes dead and stays dead. Plenty of owners have had that happen mid-trip, towing, hours from home.

Why it gets misdiagnosed as a bad injector

The trouble code literally says injector circuit, so the easy conclusion is a bad injector. Owners in the Duramax community regularly report repair bills of $850 or more for what turned out to be a worn connector, and a full injector replacement runs well into four figures. The actual failed part is a sub-$100 pigtail.

Before anyone sells you an injector over a P0201-P0208 code, unplug the connector on that cylinder and look at it. Worn, discolored terminal contacts and fine black dust inside the connector body are the fingerprints of fretting. In our experience, and across the L5P community, the pigtail is the usual culprit and the injector is rarely the problem.

It got our shop truck twice

Our own L5P threw an injector code and developed a rough idle, and the fix was a replacement pigtail, not an injector. A while later it happened again. Same failure, another worn connector.

The second one made the pattern obvious: replacing pigtails one at a time is not a fix. All eight factory connectors live in the same vibration and the same heat, so they all wear the same way. Fixing the one that failed just means waiting for the next one.

So we built something to stop it instead.

Two ways to deal with the L5P pigtail issue

Already failed? Replace the pigtail, not the injector

If a connector has already let go, the repair is a splice-in replacement pigtail with fresh terminals. We stock them from Fleece Performance (single), in 4-packs and 8-packs, plus BD Diesel singles and BD 4-packs.

Keep in mind that if one connector failed from fretting, the other seven have the same mileage and the same wear mechanism. A replacement pigtail fixes the cylinder that is down. It does nothing for the rest.

There is one more thing a replacement pigtail cannot fix. Wear at a contact interface is never one-sided: the same fretting that eats the pigtail terminals is also acting on the pins of the injector itself, and those are not a replaceable part. A fresh pigtail restores good contact, but every wear cycle after that happens against the same injector-side pins. It is one more reason stopping the movement early beats replacing the worn half after the fact.

Still healthy? Stop the wear before it starts

After the second failure on our own truck, we designed and built the 2017-2024 Duramax Pigtail Failure Fix Kit (L5P-ELC-A181) in-house at our shop in West Kelowna, BC.

The root cause of the failure is the two connector halves vibrating independently of each other. The kit attacks exactly that: a clamp locks over each of the eight injector connectors so the male and female halves move as a single unit. When there is no relative movement between the halves, the fretting that kills these connectors is drastically reduced. The clamps are 3D printed from glass fiber reinforced polyamide (PA6-GF) for heat resistance and stiffness, and a high-temp neoprene damper takes the edge off engine vibration.

The included dielectric grease is the other half of the fix, and it is in the kit for an engineering reason, not as a throw-in. Servicing each connector with a proper connector grease protects the terminals two ways. It fills and lubricates the microscopic contact surfaces, so whatever tiny movement remains does far less damage, and it seals the contact area against oxygen and moisture, so the wear debris cannot oxidize into that black insulating dust. Connector suppliers have documented that a synthetic connector grease guards against fretting corrosion and extends contact life. Clamps to stop the movement, grease to protect the contacts: the kit attacks the failure from both ends, and properly greasing all eight connectors during install is a big part of why it works.

Each kit includes:

  • (8) Injector connector clamps, one for every cylinder
  • (1) Tube of dielectric grease
  • (1) Tube of thread locker
  • (1) Vibration-damping neoprene rubber
  • M4 hardware

It installs on the factory connectors with basic hand tools, and step-by-step instructions are included. As far as we know, it is the only preventative fix for this problem on the market. Everything else out there is a replacement part for after the failure. This protects all eight cylinders for a little more than the cost of a single replacement pigtail.

Can I keep driving with a P0201-P0208 code?

Get it looked at promptly. Early on the misfire may be intermittent, but a connector that is failing will keep getting worse, and a hard failure means a dead cylinder, a rough-running engine, and a real chance of being stranded. It is a quick, cheap diagnosis. Do not sit on it.

How do I know it is the pigtail and not the injector?

Unplug the connector on the cylinder the code points to and inspect it. Worn or discolored terminal contacts and fine black dust inside the connector are the classic signs of fretting wear. In the vast majority of L5P injector-circuit codes, the connector is the problem, not the injector.

Does dielectric grease alone fix it?

It does more than most people think. A proper connector grease lubricates the contact surfaces and seals them against oxygen and moisture, and connector suppliers document it as a real defense against fretting corrosion. What it cannot do is stop the two connector halves from moving against each other, and on the L5P that movement is the root of the problem. The fix kit pairs the two: clamps stop the movement, and the supplied grease protects the contacts. Grease every connector when you install the clamps, and service them again any time you have one unplugged.

Should I replace all eight pigtails once one fails?

All eight connectors wear together, so a second failure after the first is common. If one has already failed, the two sensible plays are replacing the failed pigtail and clamping all eight with the fix kit, or replacing the full set. Replacing one and doing nothing else usually just buys time until the next code.

Cheap insurance for an expensive truck

The L5P pigtail issue is one of the few big-truck problems with a genuinely small fix. The failure is a worn sub-$100 connector that presents like a four-figure injector job, and stopping it for good costs about what these trucks eat in an oil change.
