If you're browsing for a Duramax, you might find yourself wondering; What's the difference between VGT and Non-VGT Turbochargers? Will it make that much of a difference? Just like everything in life, there are benefits and disadvantages to everything, Variable Geometry Turbochargers do offer quicker spool-up, improved throttle response, low-end torque, and power delivery across a wider RPM range. However, their complex design can be costly, and have the potential of vanes sticking due to carbon build-up.
Fixed Geometry Turbos, which is what this is, have a simpler design, consistent airflow, and provide higher horsepower at higher speeds. This particular Smeding Diesel Turbocharger is the only one of its kind operating at a lower drive pressure than any other VGT on the market and capable of 850HP! Low drive pressure means low cylinder pressure, resulting in less strain on your internals and head gaskets.

Cast vs. Billet vs SXE-R:
- The cast aluminum compressor wheel in this kit has been around for many years and is a more budget-friendly option
- CNC-machined Billet compressor wheel is much more advanced, utilizing stronger material with a more aggressive design, giving you faster spool-up and more power
- SXE-R wheel is the top-tier compressor option, lightweight and geared toward competition, Its quick-spooling characteristics would make it a sound choice for towing, daily driving, or playing at the drag strip

Ask a Question-
Hey I’m wondering what the ho capabilities are and how they change from the 62 mm up to the 72mm
As far as peak horsepower, it will generally stay the same between the sizes, the major difference you will see from the cast to the billet wheels is spool up time. The billet wheel is lighter and will allow for a faster spool up = better drivability. The SXE-R and SXE models are even lighter, with a wider blade, and are arched to provide more surface area.
